Taima Al-Jayoush
Taima Al Jayoush is a Canadian citizen of Syrian origin. A member of Barreau Du Quebec, she has defended and helped defend dozens of women and children in Syrian and European courts. At Al Aliaa Law Center, Taima conducts her work through her law office in Damascus and long-distance outreach. She also provides legal counsel on Syrian legislation.
Taima wrote a book on the rights of children in the Syrian personal status code (also known as Family or Sharia Law) and compared them to international law standards and treaties.
In 2001, Taima was the first woman to join the board of the Human Rights Organization of Syria based in Syria. She was the first woman to defend political prisoners in the Supreme State Security Court in Syria. She has represented many political opposition leaders.
Taima has conducted legal research in English and Arabic for international universities and companies. She also has a weekly column in the Arabic newspaper El-Ressala, which is based in Montreal, Canada. She covers women’s rights in the Middle East.
